Welcome to the Schools Department

In partnership with the Trustees of Religious Orders, the Archdiocese provides a network of schools across a very wide and disparate geographical area embracing eight local education authorities and the Isle of Man

Primary Secondary Sixth Form Colleges
Halton 7 1
Knowsley 25 4
Lancashire 31 5
Liverpool 53 13
St Helens 17 4 1
Sefton 30 7
Warrington 11 1
Wigan 27 5 1
Isle of Man 1
Independent 3 1
TOTAL 205 41 2

Linked closely to parishes, this network of schools provides a varying range of size and type of establishment fitted to the needs of their communities. At Foundation, Key Stages 1 and 2 there is a small number of separate Infant and Junior schools alongside the Primary schools, many with Nursery and "wrap-around" care provision.

At key Stages 3 and 4, provision is in 11 - 16 High Schools in Knowsley (with the exception of All Saints’, Kirkby which is 11 - 18), Lancashire, St Helens, Warrington and Wigan (with the exception of St Mary’s, Astley which is 11 - 18), post-16 opportunities being available in the Sixth Form Colleges. There is a mix of 11 - 16 and 11 - 18 High Schools in Liverpool and Sefton, with Saints Peter & Paul providing 11 – 18 education in Halton. Many of the High Schools have specialist College status and overall they offer excellent and distinctive Catholic secondary education throughout the Archdiocese.

The Archdiocese ensures that there is in its schools, at both primary and secondary stages, a place available for every baptised Catholic child. Successive external reports give testament to the enduring quality of the network of schools which continue to place as much emphasis on personal, spiritual and moral formation as on academic progress. In celebrating the uniqueness of the individual and fostering independence alongside responsibility to others, the Archdiocesan schools strive to offer mutual support for the common good.

The Schools’ Department Team supports the Archbishop and Trustees to carry out their responsibilities in Canon, Civil and Charity Law. It ensures a viable network of schools is secured and maintained; it appoints and increasingly offers training to Foundation Governors; it supports Governing Bodies in the appointment of senior management and, in turn, offers them continuing pastoral and professional support. It advises on pupil admission arrangements and represents the Church’s interests at local and, with the Catholic Education Service (CES), at national level. Critically, it keeps under review the activities through which it can continue to contribute to the excellence of the Archdiocesan schools.
