Organisation:
The course is designed for part-time study over a period of two years, though it may be spread over a longer period - up to five years. It is made up of 8 modules, - 6 core and 2 specialist.
(The details of the modules will be found below).
Each year: 4 modules - 3 core, 1 specialist
Each term:
5 evening sessions two hours each for 1 Core Module
1 Saturday three and half hours 1 unit of 3 for Specialist module (or as otherwise arranged)
Some reading will be required in preparation for each session.
Assessment:
Minimum of 80% attendance for each module and successful completion of assignment.
N.B. Participants may register for individual modules if there are vacancies
Course Fees:
Registration fee: £20 to be paid when returning Application Form.
Cost per module for the session 2008/2009: £35
Candidates are encouraged to explore the possibilities of their fees being paid in whole or part by, for example, LEA, School or Parish.
Core Modules - Year 1
1. THE BIBLE - OLD TESTAMENT
The purpose of this module is to introduce participants to the writing in the Old Testament in order to help them to recognise God’s revelation contained there and its continuing relevance in Christian Life today.
2. THE BIBLE - NEW TESTAMENT
The purpose of this module is to familiarise participants with the process through which the New Testament writings came into being, and to help them interpret the material presented, and understand its significance for the life of a Christian today.
3. PERSON OF CHRIST
The purpose of this module is to deepen participants’ awareness of the significance and centrality of the person and work of Jesus Christ in the daily life of the Christian as well as in the worship of the Church.
Core Modules - Year 2
4. THE CHURCH
The purpose of this module is to enable participants to reflect on the nature of the Church and its mission in the world today.
5 . SACRAMENTS
The purpose of this module is to develop participants’ understanding and appreciation of Sacrament in the life of Catholics as a sign of Christ’s continuing presence with the Church.
6. CHRISTIAN MORALITY
The purpose of the module is to help participants develop the skills of moral decision-making, to examine Christian teaching in its relation to the universal search for what constitutes "human good", and to explore the application of Christian understanding to some contemporary moral issues.
Specialist Modules
7. THE DISTINCTIVE NATURE OF A CATHOLIC SCHOOL
The Religious Dimension of Education in a Catholic School. The purpose of this module is to explore the religious dimension of the education offered in a Catholic School.
8. CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
The purpose of this module is to explore current developments in curriculum Religious Education.
9. INTRODUCTION TO PARISH CATECHESIS
The purpose of this module is to explore some basic theological ideas about the ministry of catechesis in the church today.
10. PARISH CATECHESIS: FURTHER PERSPECTIVES AND CHALLENGES
The purpose of this module is to enable participants to reflect on theological ideas underlying catechetical practice.
11. AN INTRODUCTION TO LITURGY
The purpose of this module is to enable participants to draw out the characteristics of Christian worship and understand the principles of liturgical celebration.
12. THE CELEBRATION OF GOD’S WORD IN WORSHIP
The purpose of this module is to recall the story of salvation and its celebration by God’s people today, especially in the Liturgy of the Word.
